Chapter Three: Saragost (Interlude II)

While Rumus was rummaging around in the Sanctuary of the Seven Archways seeking information about the Starborn, there were several other peopel there as well. One in particular, a scruffy looking human in dark brown robes, seemed to be paying extra special attention to Rumus. In fact, Rumus noticed that whenever he finished with a particular book or scroll this guy seemed to be right behind him, picking the item out of the library stacks and looking over it himself. He was very careful about his actions, and Rumus did not realize what was going on until after he got back to the inn . . . he was concentrating on his studies and not really paying attention to what was going on around him. Back at the inn he had time to reflect and realized that this guy was following him around and reading the same stuff Rumus read.

The next morning (March 18) the innkeeper presents Rumus with a package . . . it is a bottle of very fine, aged, elven red wine. It has a note card (like a gift label) attached to it that is pitch black. In nearly unreadable purple script on the label is the single word: Rumus.

I think that we might have one of 2 problems here. Either one or all of the Host(our evil counterparts) is in saragost. Which might be a little too coincidental seeing as how there is a whole world here and for both parties to materialize here. Or someone is having us or myself followed. This gift to me is particularly interesting. Neil can you cast detect poison on this bottle for me. (When we are in one of our rooms.)

Assuming we really do have evil twins and we can believe the hints that we each have a magical item specifically for us then wouldn't be possible that our evil twins have the same things granted them by their evil gods/goddesses? Wouldn't it also be possible that their evil gods are cheating and telling a separate set of goons who we are so they can try and off us before the big battle or keep us from finding the our special magical items? So, yeah, they probably are following us. That should be obvious since some have already tried to kill us in the middle of the day in front of everyone. It's not coincidence. It's fate. We were told it was fate by Neil's god/goddess, remember? Of course, then again, it could be you have an admirer. :::shudder:::

Personally, let's go do what we've been asked. The worst that happens is that we come back to report what we find or don't find to the council and discover that the war has begun without us. If we don't do what we're asked and there really are magical items that need to be found then we've screwed ourselves and let Neil's god/goddess down. Can't let that happen now, can we? It's highly possible that our gods/goddesses are hinting/pointing us in the right direction and we're asking too many questions. They wouldn't deliberately cheat or else they'd lower themselves to the evil gods/goddesses.

Hmmm... Everyone heard the angel; even the Knife can't deny that. Old Heakun has been talking to you too? It took me over 7 years of talking to him before I learned to listen to his divine guidance. The gods do speak to us. All you have to do is listen & be open to the possibility of communication.

I don't expect to find big magic in these towns. Yeah, there was a sword in Bronce, and the stones. Big magic like that isn't lying about all over the countryside though. I've spent the last few years searching for such wonders, and the stones were the first location I "found" that was truly touched by the gods.

I don't want to hang out in Saragost. People there are anxious to do us in. Being ambushed sucks. They have the advantage of knowing who we are, knowing the town, having lots of poison and they probably far outnumber us there. One or two failed attempts & they'll cease to under-estimate us. Given enough time & resources, they will best us.

I prefer to be proactive. We should seek out these evil agents & strike before they get another chance. While they may be hard to find in the big city. I'm sure they'll stick out in these smaller towns, which have apparently suffered somehow already. (No communication in weeks = trouble = evil agents) It's better to be the hunter in a small town than the hunted in Saragost.

Besides, Saragost kinda smells, and it's cramped. I mean, it's not nearly as nice as the fresh air & blue skies on the open road. And you can see trouble coming better out in the countryside.

Assuming that Neil (or Rygorh) casts detect poison, the wine is not poisoned.

The wine is neither magical nor poisonous.
